Renon cableway, Cable car system in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy
The Renon cableway carries passengers from Bolzano's valley base to a sunny high plateau in roughly ten minutes. The route gains about 950 meters in elevation and links the city with a resort area that spreads across several kilometers.
The original mountain rail line was converted to a cable car system in 1966, replacing what had been the only regular link to the plateau above. This switch to modern cable technology made the journey faster and more dependable for the growing number of visitors.
The cableway connects the valley to a high plateau that has been inhabited for centuries. Once up top, you encounter small villages and meadows that reflect how people have lived and worked in this elevated setting.
Cabins depart throughout the day all year round at short intervals, so waits are typically brief. Once at the top, you can easily explore trails on foot or spend time in the open before heading back down.
The support towers of the cableway are deliberately angled to deflect wind and maintain stability, a subtle engineering detail that most riders pass by without noticing. This clever design keeps the whole system running smoothly even during mountain weather changes.
