Santa Maria Arabona

Santa Maria Arabona, Medieval Cistercian abbey in Manoppello, Italy

Description

Santa Maria Arabona is a Romanesque abbey church in Manoppello with three naves supported by pillars and pointed arches. The east side features a large rose window, and the interior preserves old frescoes from different periods.

History

Construction began in 1197 after a land grant from counts Gentile and Maniera, which led to the founding of a Cistercian monastery. The site grew over the centuries and underwent several renovations, especially during the medieval period.

Culture

The west facade holds burial stones of monks from different centuries, revealing the continuous community that inhabited this place. The names and simple symbols tell of people who dedicated their lives to the community here.

Practical

The church is typically open for visitors, and you can explore both the interior and the surrounding grounds with a garden. Comfortable clothing is helpful since the ground can be uneven and there is little shade.

Did you know?

The interior preserves wall paintings by Antonio di Atri from 1373, which belong to the rare signed works by this important Abruzzo artist. These frescoes show religious figures in a local painting style that is rarely seen elsewhere.
