Archeological Museum La Civitella, Archaeological museum in Chieti, Italy
The Archaeological Museum La Civitella is a national museum in Chieti, in the Abruzzo region, displaying finds from prehistory through the Roman period. The exhibition rooms are spread across several levels and connected by modern corridors and glass passages.
The museum opened in 2000 to bring together finds that were previously scattered across different sites in the region. It was built on the grounds of the ancient acropolis of Chieti, a hilltop that had been inhabited since antiquity.
The objects on display come from the daily lives of the peoples who lived in Abruzzo before and during the Roman period, including the Vestini and the Marrucini. Walking through the rooms, you see pottery, jewelry, and tools that show how these communities actually lived.
The museum sits on a hill above the old center of Chieti, and the walk up can be steep. Once inside, signs help visitors find their way across the different levels, and display labels are written in both Italian and English.
Below part of the museum building, the remains of a Roman amphitheater have been preserved and made visible through glass floors. Visitors can look directly down at ancient ruins without leaving the building.
