Costantino Barbella Art Museum, Art museum in central Chieti, Italy
The Costantino Barbella Art Museum occupies the noble floor of Palazzo Martinetti Bianchi and displays works ranging from the 15th century to contemporary times across five thematic sections. The tour includes religious works, paintings from Naples, ceramics, and contemporary art installations.
The building started as a Jesuit convent in 1640 before being converted into a private residence in 1767 following the suppression of religious orders. This transformation marked the beginning of its use as an artistic and cultural space.
The museum displays religious frescoes from local churches and an extensive collection of Castelli ceramics donated by Professor Paparella-Treccia. These works reflect the region's artistic traditions and its craftsmanship over many centuries.
The museum is open most days and offers access to all collections and temporary exhibitions with a single admission ticket. Plan at least two hours to explore all five sections thoroughly.
The palace ceiling features a remarkable 1796 fresco by painter Giacinto Diano depicting the Apotheosis of Psyche in baroque style. This surprising masterwork is located above visitors' heads and often goes unnoticed.
