Holy Mountain of Orta, Religious complex in Orta San Giulio, Italy
The Holy Mountain of Orta is a religious complex on a hilltop overlooking Lake Orta, featuring twenty chapels equipped with frescoes and sculptures. These display various scenes from Saint Francis's life and other religious themes in artistic detail.
Construction started in 1583 under Capuchin friar Cleto da Castelletto Ticino and continued until 1788. Over two centuries, all twenty chapels were completed and filled with religious artwork.
The chapels display architectural styles from the Renaissance through the Baroque period, decorated by local artists with detailed frescoes and terracotta sculptures. They reflect the religious artistic tradition that shaped the region over centuries.
The chapels are accessible via maintained pathways that lead from the base to the summit and are easy to walk on foot. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and expect varying weather conditions depending on the season.
The hillside is planted with intentionally designed vegetation that extends to the lakeshore, creating a harmonious blend between the built structures and the natural surroundings. This careful planning unites spiritual architecture with the landscape in subtle ways.
