Ponale road, Hiking trail and cycling path between Riva del Garda and Ledro Valley, Italy
The Ponale trail spans 6.4 kilometers along the western shores of Lake Garda, passing through tunnels and offering views of the surrounding mountains.
Giacomo Cis designed and built this road in 1851, connecting the communities of Ledro Valley to Riva del Garda by carving through solid rock formations.
The trail features remnants of military fortifications, including the Tagliata del Ponale, established by Austro-Hungarian forces starting from 1860 for border defense.
The path requires approximately three hours to complete, with an elevation gain of 470 meters and separate designated sections for cyclists and pedestrians.
A hydroelectric power station along the trail harnesses energy by connecting Lake Ledro to Lake Garda through an advanced water management system.
