Straßensperre Ponale, Military fort near Lake Garda, Italy.
Straßensperre Ponale is a military fort carved into the mountain with five levels near Lake Garda. Its interior connects tunnels, gun positions, and observation points throughout the structure.
The fort was built between 1904 and 1918 and served as a strategic Austrian defensive position during World War I. It was equipped with rapid-fire cannons to control the lake and border passes.
The fort shows how soldiers lived and worked under pressure in the early 1900s, with kitchens and living areas carved deep inside the mountain. Walking through reveals the daily reality of men stationed here to guard the lake.
Visits require advance booking for guided tours, with each lasting about four hours. Protective helmets are provided and must be worn throughout the visit.
Inside are underground kitchens reached by descending roughly 190 steps, positioned to take advantage of proximity to the lake. This reveals the practical solutions soldiers had to create while working under extreme conditions.
