Alpe di Succiso, Mountain summit in Province of Reggio Emilia, Italy.
Alpe di Succiso is a pyramidal peak that rises to 2017 meters (6,617 feet) and represents the highest point in the Province of Reggio Emilia within the northern Apennines. From its summit, the mountain offers expansive views across multiple valleys and extends to distant regions on clear days.
During the last ice age, a substantial glacier shaped the Valle della Liocca between Casarola and this peak, creating the landscape we see today. The glacial formations remain visible in the valley floor and surrounding slopes, telling the story of climate change over thousands of years.
The mountain sits within the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-emiliano and serves as a natural meeting point between the mountain traditions of Emilia-Romagna and those of the southern Apennines. Visitors from both regions use the trails to experience this shared alpine landscape and its role in local identity.
Several marked trails lead to the summit from different starting points around the region, each taking varying amounts of time depending on the route chosen. Visitors should choose a path based on their fitness level and available time, as all main routes are clearly marked and well-maintained.
On clear days, visitors standing at the summit can see from the Gulf of La Spezia and Tuscan archipelago in the south to the Enza Valley and Pianura Padana in the north. This remarkably wide perspective connects three very different landscapes in a single view.
