Rifugio Bartolomeo Gastaldi is a mountain refuge in the Graian Alps at roughly 2,650 meters high and provides sleeping facilities for about 70 guests. The refuge has simple dormitory rooms, a dining hall, and serves hot meals to climbers and hikers.
The refuge was established in 1904 as an important step in developing mountain infrastructure in this part of the Alps. The Italian mountaineering association Club Alpino Italiano has managed its operations throughout the decades.
The refuge houses a small museum with historical photographs documenting alpine life and mountaineering adventures since 1880. Visitors can walk through the images and connect with the region's past and the people who crossed these mountains.
The refuge is most accessible during the warmer months when snow conditions are better and trails are passable. Visitors should bring warm clothing, good hiking boots, and basic supplies since altitude and weather can change quickly.
The kitchen serves traditional Piedmontese dishes like polenta concia and local Lanzo toma cheese made in the nearby valleys. These regional specialties are often paired with wines from the area, making meals a taste of local food traditions.
