Rifugio Roda di Vaèl, Mountain refuge in Vigo di Fassa, Italy.
Rifugio Roda di Vaèl is a mountain refuge in the southern section of the Catinaccio-Rosengarten Group at 2283 meters, built with stone walls and wooden shingle roofs. The facility provides both overnight accommodations and meals for hikers moving through this high alpine region.
The refuge was founded in 1906 as part of tourism infrastructure development in the Dolomites. In the decades following its establishment, it underwent several modernizations to meet the changing needs of mountain hikers.
The name Vaèl comes from the local Ladin language and means "cow," reflecting the deep connection between this refuge and alpine pasture farming. It remains a meeting point for hikers following routes across the Rosengarten Group.
You can reach the refuge on foot from Rifugio Paolina after taking the Carezza chairlift, or by hiking from Rifugio Ciampedìe. Since the location sits at high altitude, it is wise to arrive early in the day and be prepared for sudden weather changes common in the mountains.
The refuge underwent a complete interior renovation in 2008 and now serves dishes like Cigolade Pan pasta that can be prepared gluten-free. This adaptation makes it one of the few high alpine refuges that specifically cater to hikers with celiac disease.
