Monte Chiadenis, Mountain summit in Province of Udine, Italy.
Monte Chiadenis is a mountain summit in the Western Carnic Alps standing at 2,459 meters, with multiple technical climbing routes across its northeastern and southwestern faces. The various approaches offer different difficulty levels and pass through varied terrain with rock formations and mountain paths.
The mountain was a battle site between Italian Alpine troops and Austrian Kaiserjäger from 1915 to 1917, leaving behind military posts and trenches. These structures remain visible on the landscape today.
The name comes from the Friulian word 'cjadenis,' meaning chains, which reflects how the rock formations create patterns across the mountain range. Visitors can see this structure in the landscape when looking at how the stone formations connect and flow.
Access begins from Cima Sappada via Provincial Road 22, with parking areas near Sorgenti del Piave for mountain visitors. The best time to visit is from June through September when weather conditions are most stable.
The Via Ferrata del Chiadenis was extended in 2021 to Cima 2,454m, adding technical climbing sections through narrow chimneys and rock formations. This addition has made the route more challenging for experienced climbers.
