Leuchtenburg, Castle ruin near Lake Caldaro, Italy
The castle structure features a circular protective wall and a main building positioned on a hill overlooking Lake Caldaro in South Tyrol.
Constructed around 1200 by the Lords of Rottenburg, Castelchiaro remained inhabited until 1610 when it was abandoned and gradually transformed into ruins.
The remains of 15th-century frescoes within the main hall reflect the architectural and artistic heritage of medieval South Tyrolean fortifications.
Visitors reach the castle through a one-hour hiking trail from Campi al Lago, with access to the inner courtyard provided by metal stairs.
The castle ruins stand among distinct rock formations called Horse Teeth, creating an exceptional geological and historical combination in the region.
