Leuchtenburg

Leuchtenburg is a castle ruin positioned on a hillside above Lake Caldaro in South Tyrol, featuring circular protective walls and a central building structure. The remains reveal the original layout of rooms and passages, and the elevated location provides expansive views across the lake and surrounding valleys.

The castle was founded around 1200 by the Lords of Rottenburg and served as an aristocratic residence for over 4 centuries. It was abandoned near 1610 and gradually declined into the ruins visible today.

The castle served as a residence and stronghold for local noble families across centuries, shaping the region's medieval social structure. Today visitors can observe traces of daily life within these ruins and understand the role such fortifications played in community organization.

The hike to the castle takes about one hour from the nearby village of Campi al Lago along a marked trail. Metal steps provide access into the inner courtyard area where you can walk among the ruins at close range.

The ruins stand near distinctive rock formations locally known as Horse Teeth that give the area a striking geological character. This combination of medieval structure and unusual landscape creates an unexpected visual quality that stays with visitors.
