Castra urbana, Military barracks in central Rome, Italy
Castra Urbana was a barracks complex built inside the densely populated urban center of Rome. Only scattered wall fragments survive today, visible here and there among modern buildings in the archaeological zone.
Emperor Aurelian had this barracks built in the 3rd century CE to house troops responsible for keeping order inside the city. The site reflects a shift in how Rome managed its military presence within the urban area during that period.
These barracks housed the urban cohorts, military units who patrolled Rome and kept order in its streets. You can still sense how important these soldiers were to daily life in the city.
The remains are east of the Temple of Sol and easy to miss since they blend into the surrounding buildings. Walking slowly through the area and looking carefully at ground level and along walls helps to spot the surviving fragments.
Inscriptions found at the site show dedications from the tenth cohort to Emperor Caracalla, naming the unit directly and linking it to this specific location. Such carved records are rare and give a concrete picture of how one cohort identified itself within the city.
