Sant’Isidoro a Capo le Case, Baroque church in Ludovisi, Italy
Sant'Isidoro a Capo le Case is a Baroque church in Rome built with a Latin cross floor plan and a single nave adorned with paintings by Carlo Maratta and Domenico Bartolini. The structure stands on the Pincian Hill and houses the Da Sylva chapel designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
Spanish Franciscans began construction on the complex in 1622 following Pope Gregory XV's canonization of Isidore of Madrid. This religious foundation shaped the spiritual landscape of the Ludovisi neighborhood for centuries to come.
The chapel dedicated to Da Sylva contains a tomb monument created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini for his son Paolo, reflecting the architect's personal presence in this sacred space. This burial site shows how artistic masters left their mark on the places they served.
The church is located at Via degli Artisti 41 on the Pincian Hill and serves as the National Church of Ireland in Rome. Visitors can explore the surrounding neighborhood with its narrow streets and city views, which help with getting oriented in this historic area.
From 1810 to 1820, the convent housed the Nazarene artists, a group of painters who explored new artistic directions within these walls. This creative chapter left such an impact that the nearby street was named Via degli Artisti, a tribute that endures today.
