Founding of Milan, City founding in Lombardy, Italy
The Celtic Insubres established Milan around 590 BC as Medhelanon, selecting a location in northern Italy between several commercial routes.
The Romans conquered the Celtic settlement in 222 BC, renamed it Mediolanum, and transformed it into the capital of the Western Roman Empire.
The Visconti and Sforza families turned Milan into a center of Renaissance art, inviting notable artists including Leonardo da Vinci to the city.
Milan expanded from its initial religious center to become a walled military fortification with substantial urban development and road networks.
The name Mediolanum derives from the Latin words medio and planus, reflecting its geographic position in the middle of a plain.
