Diocesan Museum in Cortona

The Diocesan Museum occupies a former church building in Piazza del Duomo, displaying religious artworks and artifacts from churches throughout the diocese.

Founded in 1945, the museum preserves a second-century Roman sarcophagus depicting the battle of Dionysus, which attracted Renaissance masters Donatello and Brunelleschi.

The collection includes masterpieces by Fra Angelico, Pietro Lorenzetti, and ten signed paintings by Luca Signorelli, created during his final years in Cortona.

The museum maintains regular visitor schedules, welcoming over 21,000 people in 2019, with guided tours available to explore the extensive sacred art collection.

In the Sottochiesa section, visitors discover frescoes by Doceno depicting Old Testament sacrifices, alongside carved wooden stalls created by Vincenzo da Cortona in 1517.
