San Niccolò church

San Niccolò church is a baroque structure in Cortona featuring a single-nave design with a porch held up by Corinthian columns. Three bells hang in the bell tower, marking the rhythm of religious life in the town.

The church began as an oratory for the lay brotherhood Compagnia Laicale di San Niccolò in 1440. After being reestablished in 1952, the brotherhood has continued managing the building since then.

Inside, you can see a procession standard painted by Luca Signorelli showing the lamentation of Christ on one side and the Virgin Mary with Saints on the other. This artwork reflects the religious devotion that shaped the church's role in the local community over time.

The church sits on Via San Niccolò and welcomes visitors throughout the year. Regular services take place, so checking opening times beforehand helps plan your visit.

The church was remodeled during the 17th and 18th centuries while keeping its core structure intact. A fresco of the Virgin Mary with Saints from this period shows how the building adapted without losing its character.
