Temple of Isis, Roman temple ruins in Pompeii, Italy
The Temple of Isis features a raised platform with stairs, vaulted roof, and Corinthian columns, incorporating Egyptian statues within its Roman structure.
Discovered in 1764, this temple was rebuilt after the 62 CE earthquake and remained the only fully restored religious structure when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE.
The temple served women, slaves, and freedmen who followed the Egyptian goddess Isis, offering salvation through mystery rites and ceremonial practices.
The temple remains stand behind the main theater of Pompeii, with its original decorative elements now displayed at the Naples Archaeological Museum.
Large stucco ears positioned on the temple walls allowed worshippers to communicate their wishes directly to the deities within the sanctuary.
