Samnite Palaestra

The Samnite Palaestra is an athletic training facility in Pompeii with a central courtyard framed by tuff columns. The space includes a raised platform that was likely used for speeches and ceremonies.

The facility was built in the 2nd century BC during the Samnite period and operated as a gymnasium until the eruption in 79 AD. The Vesuvius explosion preserved the structures and allowed archaeologists to document ancient training methods in detail.

The courtyard shows how athletic training and military preparation were closely linked in daily life. The statues and columns reflect the importance of physical discipline for young men in this ancient society.

The Palaestra is located in Region VIII, Insula 7 and can be reached through a passage from the Triangular Forum. Wear comfortable shoes as the ground is uneven, and bring sun protection since the area gets strong direct sunlight.

Excavations began in 1768 and revealed a blend of Greek training methods with local Samnite building techniques. This mixture shows how different cultural practices coexisted in this ancient center.
