Parco sommerso di Gaiola, Marine protected area in Posillipo, Italy

The underwater park covers 42 hectares of marine territory from Marechiaro Village to Trentaremi Bay, featuring Mediterranean biological communities and archaeological remains.

Roman aristocrat Publio Vedio Pollione constructed the Pausilypon Imperial Villa along the coast during the first century BC, including a theater for 2000 spectators.

The name Gaiola originates from Neapolitan dialect meaning cage, referring to the distinctive structure of buildings on the small archipelago near Posillipo coast.

The visitor center opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 14:00, offering guided tours with glass-bottom boats, snorkeling routes, and diving experiences.

The seabed contains sunken Roman ports, nymphs, and fish ponds that submerged due to bradyseism, a gradual lowering of the earth's crust.
