Citta di Castello Communal Art Gallery

The Communal Art Gallery occupies Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera, a Renaissance building with preserved wall frescoes and decorative details spanning centuries. The collection displays paintings and sculptures from the 13th through 20th century, including works by Raphael and Luca Signorelli.

The palazzo was restored and donated to Città di Castello in 1912 by antiquarian Elia Volpi to serve as an art museum. This gift preserved the building and allowed the significant collection to become publicly accessible.

The palace name refers to a former cannon foundry nearby that once defined the neighborhood. The collection gathers religious artworks sourced from disbanded convents and churches, revealing how these pieces held meaning for the local community across generations.

The museum provides wheelchair accessibility and features regular rotating exhibitions of both historical and contemporary works. The visitor flow throughout the year remains manageable, allowing for a relaxed experience of the collection.

The garden walls display graffiti designs attributed to Giorgio Vasari, offering glimpses into Renaissance artistic practices. These spontaneous marks from a celebrated artist create a direct connection to the history of art within the space.
