San Francesco

San Francesco is a church in Città di Castello with a simple brick facade that contrasts sharply with its ornate interior spaces. The inside features detailed stucco work, elaborate ceiling decorations, and several chapels showcasing different architectural approaches.

The church was originally consecrated in 1291 and received its current Baroque form through extensive reconstruction between 1707 and 1727. This major transformation made it a notable example of Baroque architecture in the region.

The Vitelli chapel displays works by Giorgio Vasari, including a large canvas depicting the Coronation of the Virgin from 1563. Visitors can experience firsthand the artistic vision of one of the Renaissance's most important masters.

The church once housed Raphael's famous painting Marriage of the Virgin from 1504, which was taken by Napoleonic forces in 1798. This masterpiece remains one of the most important Renaissance works, and its loss is a significant part of local history.
