Batteria Amalfi, Coastal artillery in Cavallino-Treporti, Italy
Batteria Amalfi is a coastal fortification in Cavallino-Treporti built with concrete structures, steel reinforcements, and a twin gun tower of 381/40 caliber for naval defense. The complex retains its original layout with underground passages, weapons emplacements, and observation posts throughout the site.
The installation was constructed between September 1915 and May 1917 as part of Venice Lagoon's defense system against Austro-Hungarian naval forces. It was built during a period of intense military activity along the Italian coastline.
The installation takes its name from the Italian cruiser Amalfi, which was lost at sea in 1915, commemorating an important moment in naval history. This connection shapes how visitors understand the site's role in defending the region's waters.
The site is accessible to visitors through guided tours that navigate the various sections of the complex. Wearing comfortable footwear is advisable since the underground passages and different levels require some walking.
The battery housed an advanced dual-barrel anti-aircraft cannon system of 76/40 caliber, representing cutting-edge technology of its era. This system demonstrated the technological capabilities of Italian coastal defense during the First World War.
