San Pietro

San Pietro is a Romanesque church in Camaiore with a stone facade and distinctive bell tower that define its classic appearance. Its interior follows a traditional layout with several spaces and adjacent buildings that once formed part of a monastic complex.

The church was originally founded around 761 as a Benedictine monastery and shaped the religious landscape of the region for centuries. Following severe fires, major reconstructions were carried out that gave the building its current form.

The church holds a marble altar crafted by a local sculptor and dedicated to the Madonna della Pietà, reflecting the devotion that shaped this place. The sanctuary shows the skilled craftsmanship typical of religious sites in this region.

The building is easy to reach and sits near the town center of Camaiore, with ample space around it for exploration. A cemetery and outbuildings are part of the grounds and can be explored during your visit.

The monastic community created an artificial water channel called Fossa dell'Abate to direct water flow from the valley to the coast. This hydraulic work shows the practical ingenuity of monks in managing the landscape around them.
