Monte Matanna, Mountain summit in Stazzema, Italy.
Monte Matanna is a peak in the Apuan Alps, located in the municipality of Stazzema in northern Tuscany, with rocky terrain and dense woodland covering most of its triangular slopes. As you climb, the tree cover thins and gives way to open rock faces near the top.
The mountain served for centuries as a boundary marker within the Province of Lucca, helping nearby communities define their territories. Over time, its slopes were used for grazing and timber, which shaped the mix of open meadows and forest found there today.
The mountain is known locally by the name Matanna, which appears on old maps of the Lucchesia area and has been used by generations of people from the surrounding villages. Walkers from nearby towns treat the trails as a shared outdoor space, and it is common to meet local families on the paths during weekends.
The main trail to the summit starts from Stazzema and is well marked throughout, though the upper section becomes noticeably steeper. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, and carrying enough water matters since there are no facilities near the top.
On clear days, the summit offers a view of Lake Massaciuccoli and some of the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, which is unusual for a peak this far inland. Golden eagles are regularly spotted circling above the upper ridges, and patient visitors often get a good look at them.
