Basilica dell'Eremo, Minor basilica on Eremo hill in Reggio Calabria, Italy.
The Basilika dell'Eremo sits at the highest point of Reggio Calabria, combining Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements in its structure. Inside, an ornate altar area and several side chapels reinforce its role as a place of worship.
Construction of this basilica began in the mid-1500s as part of a monastery and convent complex. Following the 1908 earthquake, architect Anna Sbaraccani Anastasi carried out major renovations in 1965.
The name "Eremo" refers to its isolated hilltop location, which has served as a spiritual retreat for generations. People today come here to pray and light candles, treating it as a place of personal devotion and reflection.
Access is via Via Eremo, which leads to the hilltop location with sweeping views across the city and the Strait of Messina. Bring comfortable footwear because the path goes uphill and the ground can be uneven.
A special feature is the devotion to Madonna della Consolazione, whose statue stays here for nine months each year. In autumn, it is carried in procession to the Cathedral, where it remains during fall celebrations.
