Della Monica castle

Della Monica Castle stands on San Venanzio hill with pointed windows, crenellated walls, trenches, and bastions arranged around secondary structures to form a medieval-style complex. The ensemble includes multiple buildings and fortifications that together create an integrated settlement-like composition.

Painter Gennaro Della Monica started construction in 1889 after receiving approval from provincial authorities to build his private residence and art studio. From its inception, the site merged living quarters with artistic working spaces.

The interior holds frescoes showing landscapes and various scenes painted by Gennaro Della Monica while he lived here. These works reveal the artistic world the painter created for himself within these walls.

The Municipality of Teramo owns most of the complex today, with only one residential building remaining in private hands while restoration work continues. Visitors should check ahead since regular opening times and access arrangements are still being organized.

The construction incorporated stones and materials from the demolished church of San Venanzio, with deliberately aged elements added to create an appearance of authentic medieval craftsmanship. This reuse of local materials and intentional styling gives the place a special connection to its surroundings.
