Roman amphitheatre of Teramo

The amphitheatre of Teramo is a partially preserved Roman arena built during the early imperial period. The structure displays typical features of Roman amphitheatres with tiered rows built into stone walls that rise in concentric circles.

Built in the 1st century AD for the ancient town of Interamna, this structure served for generations as a venue for public contests and shows. It gradually lost its purpose over the centuries and fell into decline.

The amphitheatre was a gathering place where people from across the city came together for shared entertainment. Its layout still shows how Romans organized public spaces to bring citizens together while respecting social divisions.

The site sits in central Teramo and is easily accessible on foot near the city streets. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and parts of the excavation lie below street level.

Excavations uncovered original stone seating elements and structural details that reveal how skilled Roman builders were. These findings offer rare glimpses into ancient construction methods that rarely survive intact.
