Area naturale marina protetta Capo Carbonara, Marine protected area in Villasimius, Italy.

Area naturale marina protetta Capo Carbonara encompasses 14,360 hectares of Mediterranean waters containing granite formations, underwater caves, and extensive Posidonia seagrass meadows. The site is divided into zones that allow different levels of protection and human activity.

The coastal region was renamed from Carbonara to Villasimius in 1862 and previously served as a maritime trade route. Medieval watchtowers were built here to monitor shipping and protect commercial interests.

The marine protected area reflects the fishing heritage of Villasimius, where local communities have sustainably worked these waters for generations. Residents maintain deep knowledge of the sea and follow conservation rules that balance protecting nature with their livelihoods.

The site is accessible by car via the SP17 road from Cagliari or the SS125 from the north, with multiple entry points for water activities. Visitors should check local regulations since different zones have specific activity restrictions.

The Isola dei Cavoli section contains underwater granite formations where Mediterranean barracudas swim through clear water alongside red coral colonies. This area draws snorkelers and divers seeking uncommon marine encounters.
