Area naturale marina protetta Capo Carbonara covers almost 86 square kilometres of Tyrrhenian Sea off south-eastern Sardinia, from Capo Boi to the waters facing Serpentara island. It is split into three quadrants, A, B and C, and takes in the Capo Carbonara promontory, Isola dei Cavoli, the Berni, Mezzo, Libeccio, Santa Caterina and Pescatelli shoals. Underwater are Posidonia meadows, granite slides with gorgonians and sea lilies, and wrecks from Roman galleys to modern cargo ships.

The reserve was established by ministerial decree on 15 September 1998, covering about 86 square kilometres of Tyrrhenian Sea between Capo Boi and the waters off Isola Serpentara. It is split into three zones, A, B and C, with navigation and swimming banned in zone A. The protected seabed holds wrecks from Roman galleys to modern cargo ships, including the Elba Ferry off Capo Carbonara.

The reserve's name comes from the granite promontory of Capo Carbonara, and its waters hold wrecks that divers can visit: a Roman galley at the Secca dei Berni, Roman anchors at the Secca di Libeccio, a Spanish sailing ship at Punta Molentis, the cargo ship Egle at Santa Caterina and the ferry Elba Ferry off the cape. Underwater fishing is banned in all three zones, and scuba diving requires authorisation from the reserve's management.

The site is accessible by car via the SP17 road from Cagliari or the SS125 from the north, with multiple entry points for water activities. Visitors should check local regulations since different zones have specific activity restrictions.

Six named wrecks lie within the reserve, from Roman galleys to the modern ferry Elba Ferry off Capo Carbonara. The "Relitto dei tubi" (wreck of the pipes) sits off Isola dei Cavoli, and Roman anchors rest on the Secca di Libeccio. Winter libeccio and maestrale gales, together with the many shoals, caused most of these losses.
