Biblioteca delle Oblate, Public and children's library in central Florence, Italy
Biblioteca delle Oblate is a public and children's library in central Florence, housed in a former convent building that dates back to the 13th century. It spans three floors and contains reading areas, multimedia stations, exhibition spaces, and a rooftop terrace with open views of the city.
The building was founded in 1288 as the home of a secular charitable group called the Compagnia delle Oblate, and later became a convent. After a long restoration, it reopened as a public library in 2007.
The building retains visible Gothic features, including vaulted ceilings and stone details that give the reading rooms a distinct character. Local artists and community groups regularly use the space for exhibitions and workshops, making it a meeting point for the neighborhood.
The children's section is on the ground floor and is intended for readers up to age 14, while the upper floors are mainly used by adults and students. The rooftop terrace can be reached through the upper floors and is best visited on a clear day for the view over Florence.
The rooftop terrace sits almost at the same level as the dome of Florence Cathedral, making it one of the few freely accessible spots in the city where you can look at the dome face to face. Most viewpoints in Florence offer a more distant perspective, so this closeness is something visitors often find surprising.
