Casa Vasari, Renaissance residence museum in Arezzo, Italy
Casa Vasari is the former residential home of artist Giorgio Vasari in Arezzo, a three-story building with richly decorated rooms. The walls of the main floors are covered with frescoes depicting mythological and biblical themes, all painted by the artist himself.
Vasari acquired this residence in 1541 and made it his personal home before moving to Florence in 1555. The house belongs to the High Renaissance period and was shaped by its role as the private dwelling of an influential artist and historian.
The house displays frescoes showing arts and crafts that Vasari himself created to decorate his living space. These rooms reflect how the artist used his own home as a stage to showcase his skills.
The rooms are arranged chronologically so visitors can follow the artist's creative development through the spaces. It is helpful to allow time to observe the details of the wall paintings and to notice the different themes presented in each room.
The Hall of Triumph of Virtue contains decorations based on Ovid's Metamorphoses showing the struggle between virtue and fortune. This series presents unusual Renaissance interpretations of classical ancient texts that are less familiar than many other works by the artist.
