Castello di Gorzone

Castello di Gorzone is a medieval castle rising on a rocky outcrop between Gorzone village and the Dezzo River, featuring pointed arch windows and solid stone walls. The structure includes a paved inner courtyard, decorated ceilings, and partially collapsed galleries connected to the exterior through underground passages.

The castle was founded in 1160 and was initially connected to the Brusati family, who later became known as the Federici. It played a role in the medieval power structures of the region and shaped local history for centuries.

The inner courtyard displays a Venetian-inspired loggia with arches and columns, reflecting the shift from a fortified stronghold to a noble residence. This design shows how inhabitants gradually made their spaces more comfortable and representative over time.

Access to the castle is through a paved ramp leading to the large 14th-century portal, reached via Via Castello. Visitors should expect uneven flooring and wear sturdy footwear, especially when exploring the older sections.

The castle is connected to the surrounding grounds through underground passages, a feature that served as an escape route during medieval conflicts. These hidden corridors offer a rare glimpse into the defensive tactics considered when planning the fortress.
