Castello di Medusa

Castello di Medusa is a castle ruin on a granite hill near Lotzorai, featuring walls that blend seamlessly with the mountain's rocky outcrops. The structure rises from the natural stone formations, creating a fortress that appears to grow directly from the hillside itself.

The fortress was originally built as a Punic stronghold between the 5th and 2nd centuries BC and later became a Roman military installation. Over time, the structure underwent modifications that reflect changing defensive needs across multiple periods of occupation.

The castle holds protected status as Italian national heritage, representing centuries of architectural development and regional defense strategies in Sardinia.

Access to the ruins is via a marked path starting from Via Roma in Lotzorai, and the hike requires a steady pace with sturdy footwear recommended. The trail has steep and rocky sections, so arriving with adequate time and water is important for a comfortable visit.

The eastern wall contains a preserved room with an arched ceiling and white plaster, revealing how the fortress once looked inside. This space shows that the building was constructed with careful craftsmanship before it fell into decay.
