Oxena falls

Oxena Falls cascade down a canyon carved by ancient lava, with dark basaltic rocks forming steep gorges along the water's path. Mediterranean plants grow thickly along the watercourse, taking advantage of the moisture.

An old mill structure downstream reveals that people have used the waterfall's power for centuries. This facility processed grain and other goods, showing how integral water resources were to the region's economy.

Water sources in this region have shaped local livelihoods for centuries, and visitors can still observe how communities adapted to living near flowing water. The surrounding villages developed traditions of farming and water use that remain visible in the landscape today.

Access is via Provincial Road 28, with parking available near the hiking trailhead. Wear sturdy shoes as the lava stone surfaces can become slippery, especially after rain or near the water.

Water flows continuously throughout the year, even during droughts, because multiple natural springs feed the river from below the surface. This steadiness is rare in dry climates and makes the waterfall a source of water when other areas face shortages.
