Moncolano Castle, Medieval castle ruins near Contovello district, Trieste, Italy.
Moncolano Castle consists of medieval ruins positioned on a strategic hilltop overlooking the Adriatic Sea and Miramare Castle below. Stone walls and foundations remain visible at this location, revealing the structure of the former fortress.
The fortress was built in the early 14th century by Trieste municipality to control important trade routes. By the 1600s, it had fallen into decline and was eventually abandoned.
The structure is also called Torre di Prosecco and stands in a wine-producing region that lends its name to the globally recognized Prosecco wine. The connection between the location and this beverage remains visible in how locals refer to the area.
The castle ruins are located near Contovello cemetery at coordinates 45°42′11″N 13°43′55″E. Since only scattered remains survive, wear sturdy shoes and plan for a brief exploration of the site.
Archaeological excavations in the 1970s uncovered remains of a complex fortification system featuring a moat and drawbridge at the entrance. These discoveries reveal how sophisticated the original structure was despite its fragmentary appearance today.
