Vittoria Light, Coastal lighthouse on Gretta hill in Trieste, Italy.
Vittoria Light is a coastal stone lighthouse in Trieste that rises approximately 68 meters above the surrounding landscape with a tapered cylindrical design. A bronze statue crowns the structure, offering views across the gulf below.
The structure was built between 1923 and 1927 on the site of a former Austro-Hungarian military post. It was created as a memorial to Italian sailors who lost their lives during World War I.
Two shell decorations from the battleship Viribus Unitis mark the entrance, and an inscription honors sailors who died serving their country. These details transform the structure into a place of remembrance for maritime losses.
Access to the top involves climbing 285 steps and is available on weekends from April through October, with a maximum of 15 visitors at once. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for steep stairs and height.
Inside the tower sits a crow's nest topped with a copper dome, a detail many visitors miss entirely. The optical system operates at substantial height, revealing the engineering care put into the original design.
