The Palazzo del Governo features a grand facade with mosaic decorations, three floors, and multiple entrances facing both Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia and Piazza Verdi.
The current structure, built between 1901 and 1905 by Emil Artmann, replaced an earlier palace from 1764 that was commissioned by Maria Theresa of Austria.
The palace's architectural elements reflect the strong Austrian influence in Trieste, with its design incorporating both Habsburg imperial style and Italian decorative features.
The building currently houses the Prefecture of Trieste and maintains restricted access, though visitors can view its exterior and photograph the facade from the square.
The palace's mosaic decorations underwent significant changes after World War I, replacing the original Austrian emblems with the House of Savoy coat of arms.
