Casa Terni-Smolars, Art Nouveau residential building in Via Dante Alighieri, Trieste, Italy.
Casa Terni-Smolars is an Art Nouveau residential building along Via Dante Alighieri comprising three distinct sections. The central part recedes slightly from the projecting lateral wings, creating a layered and dynamic front elevation.
Architect Romeo Depaoli designed this residence in 1906 for Cavaliere Augusto Terni, a prominent local patron. The ground floor was later occupied by Smolars, a stationery shop that became part of the building's identity.
Large circular windows above the main entrance display two female statues created by sculptor Romeo Rathmann, whose other works also adorn the rooftop. These artistic elements remain central to how the facade presents itself to passersby.
The building's interior received renovation work in 1970 and the exterior facade was restored during the mid-1990s. It sits at street level and can be viewed clearly from the sidewalk along Via Dante Alighieri.
The top floor features a suspended perimeter loggia that culminates in two side domes, while wrought iron balconies display ornamental floral designs. These details set it apart from surrounding structures and create a distinct visual landmark.
