Castle of Monaselice, Medieval castle complex in Monselice, Italy

The Castle of Monselice is a fortified complex with four distinct sections built at different times. The oldest part is the Casa Romanica from the 11th century, followed by the Castelletto and the Torre Ezzeliniana.

The castle was originally founded as a defensive fortress by Ezzelino III da Romano in the 10th century. Later, when the Marcello family took it over in 1405, it transformed into a Venetian residence.

The castle displays how wealthy families lived during medieval and Renaissance times, with their furnishings, weapons, and decorated rooms. You can see how the taste and power of these households are reflected in each space.

It is best to visit between March and October when the castle is regularly open. It helps to check the opening hours ahead of time, as these vary between summer and winter weeks.

The Torre Ezzeliniana is known for its monumental fireplaces, an architectural feature found nowhere else in Italy from the medieval period. These fireplaces show the high skill of the craftsmen and stonemasons of that era.
