Cappella Tiranni, Renaissance chapel in Cagli, Italy

The Cappella Tiranni is a Renaissance chapel inside the Church of San Domenico in Cagli with painted surfaces from that period. A central marble throne displays Madonna surrounded by holy figures while the walls are filled with religious scenes.

In the middle of the 15th century, Pietro Tiranni hired Giovanni Santi, the father of Raphael, to paint the chapel inside the Church of San Domenico. This commission connects the space to one of the Renaissance's most influential artistic families.

The chapel displays religious scenes with the Annunciation in the vault sections and below it conversations between holy figures and the Resurrection of Christ. These depictions shape how visitors experience the spiritual meaning of the space.

The angel beside Saint Francis, with gilded wings and a light precious robe, is traditionally identified as a portrait of Raphael at about nine years old. Some scholars also see the painter's own face in Saint John the Baptist. Fausta Gualdi linked the soldiers in the Resurrection to Raphael's later Gavari Crucifixion predella.
