Chiesa di San Francesco di Paola, Baroque Catholic church on Via Manzoni, Milan, Italy
San Francesco di Paola is a Catholic Baroque church located on Via Manzoni in Milan, featuring an impressive architectural design from the early 18th century. Inside, a grand central altar displays an altarpiece by Giacomo Guerrini depicting the Madonna and child alongside Saints Michael and Francis of Paola.
Built in 1728 under architect Marco Antonio Bianchi's designs, the church received facade additions from Emilio Alemagna in 1891. These modifications reflected evolving ideas about church design that developed across more than 160 years.
The interior walls display oval reliefs created by Gaetano Perego in 1753, showing key moments from the life of Saint Francis of Paola. These artworks remain visible reminders of the spiritual teachings that shaped this sacred space.
The church sits near multiple public transportation stops, making it easy to reach on foot or by transit. Regular opening hours allow time to explore the religious artworks inside and observe the architectural details at leisure.
The church hosted the funeral services of renowned Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi in 1901. This event made it a significant location in Milan's musical heritage and shows its importance as a cultural center in the city.
