Castelvecchio

Castelvecchio is a medieval neighborhood in Siena that spreads across the city's highest hill. Three parallel streets follow the original Roman layout of Saena Julia and continue to structure this district today.

During the 11th century, the area was enclosed by defensive walls that marked the first fortified settlement of what would later become Siena. These fortifications represented a key moment in the city's growth from its Roman roots to medieval power.

The home of Renaissance painter Domenico Beccafumi sits along Via Sarrocchi with a facade that the artist reportedly designed himself. This building reflects how artists once lived within this neighborhood and left their mark on its appearance.
