Chiesa del Gesù

Chiesa del Gesù, Renaissance church in Ferrara, Italy.

The Chiesa del Gesù is a Renaissance church in Ferrara designed with a measured facade by architect Alberto Schiatti that follows classical proportional systems characteristic of the period. The building features the restrained geometric forms and functional design typical of early Jesuit architecture in Italy.

Construction began in 1570 after Duke Ercole II d'Este invited the Jesuit order to establish an educational institution in the city. This project reflected the duke's efforts to modernize Ferrara and strengthen religious authority through the influence of the influential order.

Inside, visitors find a 15th-century terracotta sculpture depicting the Mourning Over Christ, created by artist Guido Mazzoni, which draws people's attention through its emotional intensity. The piece demonstrates how religious art served as a way to inspire personal reflection among those who entered the space.

Access to the building is possible via a ramp, making visits convenient for people with mobility restrictions. It is best to arrive in the morning when the space is quieter and natural light illuminates the artworks inside more effectively.

The apse contains the Mausoleum of Barbara of Austria, second wife of Alfonso II d'Este, crafted by sculptor Francesco Casella in the late 1500s. This monument represents a rare example of how dynastic power and artistic craftsmanship were linked in the region.
