Castle of Savignone, Medieval castle in Savignone, Italy.
Castle of Savignone stands on a rocky spur with a semi-circular great tower and rear defensive wall built into the natural stone formation. From its hilltop position, the structure commands views over the surrounding valley and the land below.
Built in 1207, the castle became a key stronghold of the Fieschi family in the 13th century. It stood at the crossroads of an important trade path linking the coast with the inland valley.
The castle displays features of medieval defensive building that show how local noble families controlled the region. Visitors can still see today how its placement and design reflect the strategic importance this place once held.
The trail to the castle starts from Savignone village and goes uphill along a hiking path. The climb is steep, so wear proper shoes and allow time for the walk.
The southern tower of the castle still stands intact while most of the rest lies in ruins. From the top of this tower, the views reach across Valle Scrivia and the gray stone walls blend seamlessly with the rocky landscape.
