Borgo Fornari Castle

Borgo Fornari Castle is a medieval stone ruin positioned on elevated terrain in the Ligurian countryside near Genoa. The site features defensive walls and a central tower that still define its physical form today.

The fortress was built in 1121 and served as a strategic outpost controlling roads to the Genoese region of Voltaggio. Its long standing demonstrated its importance to regional defense systems across centuries.

The name traces back to the Fornari family, who controlled and shaped the property across generations as local landholders. Walking through the ruins reveals how noble families of this region demonstrated power and status through their fortified homes.

The ruins can be reached by following signs to Ronco Scrivia and then taking local roads through Borgo Fornari village. The site is open to walk around, though you should watch for uneven ground and partially unstable stone structures.

The surviving tower remains visible from multiple vantage points in the valley, marking the landscape as these structures did for centuries. It is part of a larger network of defensive posts that once covered the entire region.
