Monte Reale, Mountain summit in Liguria, Italy.
Monte Reale is a mountain summit reaching approximately 900 meters (2,953 feet) at the western edge of Antola Regional Natural Park in Liguria. It sits between Val Vobbia and Valle Scrivia, two valleys that branch eastward from this elevated point.
A medieval castle occupied this peak from the 11th to 13th centuries, serving as a defensive stronghold that monitored passages and trade between the valleys below. When the fortress lost its strategic importance, the Sanctuary of Madonna di Loreto was built there in 1868.
The Sanctuary of Madonna di Loreto stands as a spiritual focal point for the surrounding mountain communities, hosting local worship and gatherings. Pilgrims and hikers visit throughout the year to connect with this sacred place set high above the valleys.
A mountain shelter beside the sanctuary remains open year-round, providing basic overnight accommodations for hikers and visitors. Expect exposure to weather at this altitude, so bring appropriate clothing regardless of the season.
On clear days, the summit offers views extending from Genoa to the Maritime Alps and occasionally Corsica across the sea. This exceptional visibility results from the elevated position and the sparse vegetation at this height.
