Vernazza Castle, Medieval fortress in Vernazza, Italy

Vernazzo Castle is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky ridge directly above the village along the Ligurian coast. The structure consists of a cylindrical tower and fortified walls strategically positioned to command views of both the bay and sea approaches.

The structure was built in the 11th century by the Obertenghi family and later served as a defense point against pirate raids that threatened the coast. Over time the fortress changed hands and came under control of various noble families.

The castle embodies Ligurian building traditions with stone cut directly from the rock, making it blend seamlessly into the coastal landscape. Visitors can observe how residents used this location across centuries as both a refuge and lookout post.

The climb to the fortress follows steep stone steps from the harbor, so visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be in good physical condition. The best time to visit is between spring and autumn when weather is stable and the paths remain dry.

The cylindrical tower is the oldest surviving section and dates from the fortress's earliest days, while the surrounding walls were added later. From this ancient tower watchmen had an exceptional line of sight across the sea and could spot ships long before they reached the harbor.
