Vernazza Castle, Medieval fortress in Vernazza, Italy
The stone castle stands on a rocky ridge above Vernazza, featuring a circular watchtower that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding coastline.
Built in the 11th century by the Obertenghi family, the fortress later served as a defense point against pirates and changed hands through various noble families.
The castle represents the maritime defensive architecture of the Cinque Terre region, displaying traditional Ligurian construction methods and military engineering.
Visitors reach the castle by climbing steep stone steps from the harbor, with entry possible during daylight hours from spring through autumn.
The cylindrical tower remains the oldest existing part of the structure, providing a strategic observation point covering both the village and sea approaches.
