Saint George church

Saint George church is a pre-Romanesque church building in Campobasso with a gabled front wall divided by two pillars separating the main nave from the side sections. A funnel-shaped rose window sits at the top and lets light pour into the interior space.

This church was built in the 10th century on the site of a former pagan sanctuary, and its walls incorporate stone parts from older Romanesque buildings. This blending shows how early Christian communities chose to build in places that already held spiritual importance.

The entrance portal features a carved Lamb of Christ surrounded by detailed floral and vine motifs that express medieval religious beliefs. These ornaments show how artisans translated faith into stone decorations that worshippers could see and touch.

The building sits on raised ground within Campobasso and gives visitors clear views toward both the historic town center and the modern outer areas. Its elevated position makes it easy to spot and reach from several different paths through the city.

Next to the church sits an old burial ground enclosed by a low wall, with a small barred window showing a tombstone carved with a human head in high relief. This unusual sculptural detail offers a glimpse into burial practices that shaped the community for centuries.
