Church of St. Andrew, Gothic church in Levanto, Italy

The Church of St. Andrew stands on piazza Sant'Andrea in Levanto. Its facade is clad in alternating bands of white Carrara marble and green serpentinite, a pattern typical of Genoese Gothic architecture, and ends in small hanging arches with apotropaic heads. The interior has five naves separated by slender columns banded in the same alternating motif, with intercommunicating side chapels.

The church is documented from the 13th century, with 1222 given as the hypothetical start of construction; by 1230 it may have been at least partly finished, since it hosted the meeting between the Da Passano lords and Levanto's citizens over the pacts of 1229 that led the town to submit to Genoa. In 1450 the side walls were opened and the interior passed from three to five naves; the church was consecrated on 20 May 1463. Between 1584 and 1585 the presbytery was lengthened and the apse rebuilt for the wooden choir.

The wooden crucifix above the red Levanto marble baptismal font, carved in the 15th century, is the object of fervent devotion: it was found after a storm on the beach of Vallesanta, in the western part of Levanto. The church is still the seat of the parish of the same name in the Riviera vicariate of the Diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato.

The church stands on piazza Sant'Andrea, and the entrance is through the Gothic portal under the 15th-century lunette fresco. The bell tower, given its present form in 1805, rises beside the facade. The interior is organised into five naves with intercommunicating side chapels, so the aisles can be followed from chapel to chapel.

The facade's alternating bands of white Carrara marble and green serpentinite follow a decorative pattern typical of Genoese Gothic architecture. The upper section ends in hanging arches terminating in apotropaic heads, carved to ward off evil. The marble rose window and the facade were restored under architect Alfredo d'Andrade between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
