Col Rodella, Mountain summit in Val di Fassa, Italy
Col Rodella is a mountain summit in the Dolomites, rising above Campitello di Fassa in Val di Fassa at around 2,400 meters (7,900 feet). It can be reached by cable car from the valley floor and sits at a crossroads of trails that connect several surrounding peaks, with a mountain hut near the top.
A shelter was built on the summit in the early 1900s to serve mountaineers crossing the Dolomites at a time when foot travel through these passes was common. Over the following decades the hut grew from a basic refuge into a regular stop on the hiking routes of the valley.
The summit sits in the heart of the Ladin-speaking valleys, where a distinct local identity shapes the way people relate to the mountains around them. The mountain hut on top follows traditional building styles of the area, with wood and stone that reflect how mountain shelters have looked here for generations.
The cable car from Campitello di Fassa brings you to the top in a few minutes, making the summit reachable even without a long climb. Weather at this elevation can shift quickly, so it helps to bring an extra layer and wear shoes with a firm sole.
The Col Rodella is one of the most used paragliding launch sites in the Dolomites, with several take-off areas on the grassy slopes just below the top. On a clear summer day, it is common to see a dozen or more colorful wings lifting off from the hillside and drifting slowly over the valley below.
